If you want to travel max distane to a point on a sphere you would have to start at that point however if you want to use a compass the heading would change at the pole so I vote for the south pole heading north which is in any direction you take.

Since your compass will go crazy when you approach true magnetic north, I would say that you would have to start on the Equator and travel either East or West.

You might think the distance between yourself and the wall is infinite because by dividing the distance in a succession of two seems to be an infinite.
However, the prooof is that the original FINITE distance is between you and the wall,
proof states by if you go further you exceed it, if you dont get there you have not reached the end of the distance.
A mile is a mile,no matter how many times you divide it, the sum will aleways equal a mile.
This is where threoms and Laws come into play,

Once more into the breech. Assuming north and magnetic north are the same. If you traveled either north west or north east from a point on the equator in a spiral would not that distance be more than 1/2 the earths diameter. I AM ASSUMING EAST WEST WOULD NOT WORK BECAUSE YOU COULD NOT DETERMIME A STARTING OR ENDING POINT.

Okay everyone needs an atta boy for your answers.
The answers are East or West.

A few years back, I was bored with contemplating my Navel and needed a challenge to some thought processes. I was trying to understand an acient phrase, "As far as East is from West" this was used in a culture that knew the world as being flat, and the compass was not even invented yet. Navigation was done by the stars and sun

If you travel North or South you will eventually reach a pole at which time you will reverse your direction if you continue.

However if you travel East, you will continue traveling east indefinitely. Traveling West gets the same result of going west indefinitely. Any other direction followed will eventually cause you to cross a pole at some point in time.

I posted this challenging question to gain credibility with the Autor of this thread. In a conversation with her. I had inadvertently mixed up East and West. I had it right in my mind, it was just that the map was upside down. You don't do that with a sailor and get away with it.

Hi Lawdawg!

Thanks that was a good one.

Just kidding Law

I'm glad I missed the beginning and conclusion to the directional question - would have taxed my brain trying to figure it out. Very interesting discussion.

Now can we go back to one of the ones like, "Does a bear..............oh, sorry, it's the one about a tree falling and making a sound.

Well, what do ya expect of an old lady when it's nearly midnight....Law...please come save me...I may be in too deep here....

Speaking of sounds! What is the physics behind this?

Pour some hot coffee in a porcelin mug, add some cream and sugar , then stir the coffee.
While the coffee is rotating tap the spoon on the rim of the cup. A common ritual right?

Now stir again and do the same thing except listen to the sound created buy tapping the spoon on the rim of the cup. You will hear a resonant note that will increase in pitch with each tap and continue, creating a sound higher than the previous one. If you continue this the sound will increase in pitch indefinitely.
Note: the sound never decreases in pitch and does not seem to relate to any particular influence of speed of movement, temperature, or frequency of tapping.except that the coffe must be rotating in the cup.

Now I just tried it again with my coffee and got nothing but a clink clink, ands said oh boy someones going to try this and hear nothing and give up, or worse they think I am hearing things...... but then I heated it up in the microwave, and put some sugar in and stirred and bingo it started. hmmmm sometimes the sound is very audible and sometimes not (with the same cup even)

Q: What is the cause of the sound?
Q: Why does it raise in pitch?
Q: what are the variables that effect it?
Q: Am I the only one that hears this?

YYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am # 600!!!!!! 600 posts and still going........

I am going to make a simple guess on mediaman's question.

Sugar crystals might help make resonant frequencies and increase in pitch.

I am going to try the experiment in a minute.....

I will let you know my professional analysis.

Albert Einstein predicted the existence of gravitational waves in 1916 as part of the theory of general relativity. He described space and time as different aspects of reality in which matter and energy are ultimately the same. Space-time can be thought of as a "fabric" defined by the measuring of distances by rulers and the measuring of time by clocks. The presence of large amounts of mass or energy distorts space-time -- in essence causing the fabric to "warp" -- and we observe this as gravity. Freely falling objects -- whether a soccer ball, a satellite, or a beam of starlight -- simply follow the most direct path in this curved space-time.
Ok, MEDIA, dont give the answers out till I can analyze your question and develope some results for an answer. It just so happens I am dying for a cup of coffee.

I need some help researcing analog flash clocks on the web.
Two years ago I found a website in Israel at Technion, the equivilent of MIT in Haifa, Israel.
It was a collection of the most beautiful working analog clocks. The only thing visible in these clocks were the hands and numbers, no housing. They could be downloaded to your PC and set as wall paper or screen savers. I lost a PC due to a virus abouttwo years ago and along with it all links to these sites.

one in particular was a futuristic looking 3D clock with metalic looking hands and numbers that appeared to be floating above a dark bronze surface and was tilted away from view and a little angled to the left with a sweeping second hand. I am looking for some creative flash programers that have the talent to create these master pieces.

If anyone can direct me to a website or contact person for these clocks I would apreciate it very much... I have googled every search phrase I can think of to try to locate a site...No luck so far..
